The researchers found that when the roles were reversed at speed dating events, and women moved round to approach the men, they found that women made more offers than they did at events when they sat still.
One possible theory is that the person who moves has more confidence. Belot and Francesconi's study also took all the data provided by each person from their profile, to work out what attributes people were looking for in a potential mate.
We found that women prefer taller men and men prefer slimmer women," says Belot. Perhaps this is not a big surprise.http://checkout.midtrans.com/villora-agencia-de-citas.php
Speed dating: the Happy Meal of romance?
But it turns out - people are often ready to compromise on these preferences. So, if a woman likes academic men, but she goes speed dating one night and no one is particularly academic, she will lower her expectations on this occasion, and instead pick men who next best fit her criteria.
Belot thinks one explanation is that people who go to a speed dating event assume that is representative of the pool of available single people. But if you break out of the mould of what you think you want, it could actually be beneficial for society at large. People marry people very similar to themselves - from the same socio-economic background for example.
And economists argue that this stops social mobility between generations. For instance, people from rich privileged backgrounds marry each other, while people from more disadvantaged backgrounds marry each other. But speed dating shows that people are not too fixed in their views of who they should date, says Belot, if they are given the opportunity.

The Ahmed gene pool didn't bless me with either a Pitt-like body or a Clooney-style boat race, but it may have dished out a wee bit of Corbett-style comedy. And if you've ever seen Corbett reclining in his chair and telling a tale, it's at least seven minutes long. And 10 seconds of that has to be: No time to waste - can't even get a good look at the person you're talking to as that will take at least 30 seconds. Rather than waste all that valuable time staring into someone's eyes, whispering sweet nothings, it's better to launch into a short anecdote about travelling to the venue, the trials and tribulations of circumnavigating hordes and buskers.
Or worse, hordes of buskers. Smile a lot and hold eye contact, don't shuffle your feet while looking distractedly at the floor. Shake hands and then it's goodbye, sailing off to the distant table two feet away and recreating the same ambience. I couldn't even digest whether I'd made a good impression in that timeframe, let alone judge the woman across from me. And yet in between every slot I had to give the woman still two feet away marks out of So the trick is to make a good impression, make a connection and fill out a spreadsheet - all in three minutes.
If smash and grab is your style, that should be all you need to create the perfect air of mystique and secure a second date.
Speed dating: Why are women more choosy?
Judging by the furious swapping of numbers at the end of the event, it worked for lots of people. Miraculously, I did manage to meet one rather nice lady myself. The funny thing was, it was in the bar afterwards; I hadn't spoken to her before then.
